Plugable USB 3.0 Powered Hub : The Good News is it Seems to like an iMac

I recently posted up a thread in which I explained how my previous USB 2.0 Powered hub didn’t seem to like my new 2013 iMac and it was subsequently returned, and that I was on the look out for a replacement…

http://tbni.blog/2013/10/18/d-link-usb-2-0-7-port-hub-unboxing-important-mac-related-notes/

Well after a little searching I felt I may have found that replacement, and at this early stage it does indeed seem that I have.

So if you are a late 2012 or late 2013 iMac owner who has had issues with USB hubs not being able to cope then one worth trying for you is the ‘Plugable’ Powered USB 3.0 HUB. I picked it up on Amazon.co.uk for about £30.

For reference I currently have a 500Gb Portable USB 3.0 drive, a 1TB Portable USB 3.0 drive, and a powered 3TB USB 3.0 plugged into the rear of my iMac along with this 7 Port Powered Hub. In the HUB I have had running without any issues whatsoever a 320Gb Powered Drive and a further 1TB Powered drive (These are both USB 2.0). I have also had at the same time my iPhone 5s and iPad (3rd Generation) syncing and iPhoto pulling photos off my Panasonic TZ30 digital camera as well as my GoPro HD Hero 3 Black Edition.

Now admittedly there is a lot going on here on here and much more than I usually would be doing at one one time, but it was a good way to test the hub. The results were ‘two thumbs up’ everything worked away doing its thing, without any drive drop outs or apparently power problems. (My previous HUB failed on simply having the 2 external drives plugged into it).

So all in all after over a weeks use the HUB is yet to experience any issues or give me any problems. A firmware update is available however it must be done from a Windows machine. I have not at this stage completed this firmware upgrade as things are working well, and as the man says, ‘If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it.’

One little superstition I did carry out was before I plugged in any USB 2.0 devices into the HUB was I allowed each port to mount a USB 3.0 drive. I don’t know if this is a requirement, and to be honest I doubt very much it is, however it is something I and my colleagues always do with USB 3.0 ports – mount a USB 3.0 device first. The legend goes it lets the port know it is a 3.0 rather than getting locked in at 2.0 speeds.

So there you have it, if you are experiencing iMac related USB HUB issues this may well be the HUB worth trying, (one final thought is that the blue LEDs can be rather bright at night, so make sure you have some black electrical tape to cover them up).

Happy Call of Duty : Black Ops 2 Day 13/11/2012

COD-BO2

Every November now, we are teased and eventually treated with the latest Call of Duty episode.

And as a result of this everyone has their own feelings about its release, some will see it as the pinnacle shooter of our generation, and some will see it as the biggest pile of n00b infected glitch ridden trash ever to be released.

Although the latter is no doubt exceptionally unfair and more than likely the comments of someone who has found their favourite glitch has since been ironed out, or at their first attempt of 0wning the battlefield became subsequently Pwned!

The Ulster Covenant 1912 – 2012

Today celebrates the centenary of the Ulster Covenant in Northern Ireland. The Covenant was signed in 1912 by almost 500,000 people to express their opposition to Home Rule.

Today will see almost 30,000 marchers and supports of the Covenant and orange order descend upon Belfast to march all around the city in the largest open air parade for over 20 years.

Good luck and have a good day to all those involved.

It is also a highly contentious march that having looked at twitter already looks like there are already trouble makers around looking to stoke the fires of the past and cause as much disruption as they can, of course partnered with the traditional Belfast riot.

Therefore lets all hope that calm rules today and this event does not become a media frenzy on the trouble that can still dominate Belfast.

Oh and if you would like to sign the Covenant you can do so 100 years later at Ulster Covenant 2012 – Sign here

21st September 2012 – iPhone 5 Launch Day – Unboxing and Quick Thoughts!

iPhone5

Any Apple Launch Day now is a big one, and this one was the biggest so far.  Queues have been reported as 83% bigger for this release of the iPhone 5 than they were for last years iPhone 4s’ event.

I have to agree with this, as I opted to sleep in a little as last year wasn’t really that much of an issue, so when I arrived at the queue this morning at a little after 05.30 am at the Apple Store, Victoria Square, Belfast I was horrified and also a little impressed to see no less than 300 people already in the queue!

At shortly after 11am I left the store with a little bag containing a white 32Gb iPhone 5 – Sweet!

And that is exactly what it is – SWEET!

Scoobfest 2012 – 22nd July 2012 – Junction One, Antrim

Scoobfest 2012 - 22/07/2012 - Junction One, Antrim

Scoobfest is the biannual car show run by Irish Subaru website, ScoobyIreland.com and it brings Subarus from across the country all together to show off their stuff.  It has made its home at the Junction One Retail Park in Antrim and as such promises stunning motors, an easy to get to location and something many car shows lack, something for the ladies – shopping!

This year it was joined by a few other websites, namely the Celica Owners Club, NI-Vaux, Irish Subaru Drivers Club, Subaru Driver’s Club Northern Ireland and the Mitsubishi Lancer Register.

The result of all this was a fantastic set of motors all in one spot!

This is a Charity event and this time round all proceeds from the show went to Cool FM / Downtown Radios ‘Cash For Kids’ Appeal, a great local charity!  As well as this over £1000 in prizes were up for grabs, and in relation to those here are the results from the day :

12th July 2012 Ardoyne Riots – via Twitter

This year I found out how truly amazing Twitter can be, and it was in a bad situation.  As you will probably no each July Belfast turns from an amazing, beautiful, diverse and accepting city into a pit of sin, fighting, rioting and hate rule the streets for a day or two then we are back to our brilliant best.

It is these couple of days though that get us plastered all over the world news and as you will see from the following photos it is not in a good light!

Some call this ‘activity’ ‘reactional rioting’ in an attempt to disguise what it is.  That being criminal damage, attempted murder, disorderly behaviour and riotous behaviour, all pretty high up there in the criminal scale of things.

No matter what anyone says it is clear from yesterday that these riots were planned, no side, be it orange or green could have done anything to prevent these riots, there was gonna be a fight and that’s it!

Even the rioters were caught on camera fighting with each other!

Thugs… Get out, move on, grow up, leave us and leave our city, in this our year, our time, our place, and oh yeah you’re not welcome!

And your guns aren’t welcome on our streets, shooting at Police will never be acceptable, you want to be a killer?  Just get yourselves under that water cannon and have a good aul Belfast wash!
