Hopefully this year will see the release of both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X – that ‘hopefully’ refers to the unknown impact that Covid-19 will have on either systems’ release. But let’s stay positive and rephrase that…

This year will see the release of both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. So in the war of Sony v Microsoft who will win in the PlayStation 5 v Xbox Series X battle?

Regardless of whether you are just a gamer, a console gamer, a Sony fanboy or a MS fanboy the specs look pretty exciting…

PlayStation 5 v Xbox Series X : So what does this all mean?

Firstly both machines are ridiculously close to each other spec wise. If you look at the figures the Xbox does look like it edges ahead, but at this stage of the game it is really difficult to say what the real world noticeability of these differences will be. There are some interesting stats to pick up though through that really shows the improvements that we have made in hardware since 2013.

The biggest differences of note comes in the GPU and the I/O Throughput :

GPU :

  • PS5 – GPU: 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency), Custom RDNA 2
  • Xbox – GPU: 12.155 TFLOPs, 52 CUs at 1.825GHz, Custom RDNA 2PS5 – GPU: 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency), Custom RDNA 2

I/O Throughput :

  • PS5 – IO Throughput: 5.5GB/s (Raw), Typical 8-9GB/s (Compressed)
  • Xbox – IO Throughput: 2.4GB/s (Raw), 4.8GB/s (Compressed)

The PS5 is obviously ready for some hardcore streaming capabilities.

Looking at the GPU – the difference between the two is almost 2 TFLOPS. To put this in perspective the PS4 preformed at 1.84 TFLOPS total. The real question though is – is this difference now relevant? Is any developer at the point that they will be pushing either hardware to the point where this will be relevant? I think we can safely assume, no – not yet.

Verdict :

This is just my opinion, but both machines are going to be very, very capable consoles. This generation’s battle will (again) be won on the games. Who ever gets the better exclusives will undoubtably take the crown. In my opinion Sony currently hold that accolade, but I look forward to get tore into this new generation.
