IMC Season Opener to Carry the Title: The Gene McDonnell Memorial

As they prepare to launch their 2026 season, the Irish Minibike Championship invites you to an unmissable opening round at Nutts Corner on Sunday, 19th April, carrying the distinguished honour of ‘The Gene McDonnell Memorial Trophy ‘race.
This year marks 40 years since Gene’s passing, following a freak accident during the 1986 250cc Isle of Man TT race, where the young rider collided with a runnaway horse, which had been startled when a helicopter had come in to land to take an injured competitor to hospital, described as the most horrific accident ever on the TT circuit, Gene and the horse were both killed instantly. The IMC is truly honoured to celebrate the life and achievements of one of the sport’s most influential figures with an event that unites our entire community.

The McDonnell family, who have been sponsoring the Open class at the IMC for the past 5 years, with the prestigious ‘Gene McDonnell Memorial’ cup being presented to the winner each year, will join us, alongside a special stand featuring two iconic machines from Gene’s remarkable racing story—the 350G Yamaha he purchased himself and the 250 EMC Rotax, the last machine he rode. This is a rare opportunity for riders and fans alike to connect with Gene’s legacy and witness firsthand the history and passion that have shaped Irish minibike racing.
A highlight of the day will be the 10-lap Gene McDonnell Memorial Race—a fitting tribute that promises thrilling action and heartfelt celebration of the passion Gene brought to every race. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this memorable moment.
