Cookstown 100 Visitors Guide :

TBNI.Blog have compiled the most useful and popular posts in relation to the Cookstown 100 in order to bring you a basic Cookstown 100 Visitor’s Guide. Hopefully this guide will give you an idea and some knowledge of the course and plenty of other useful information.

History :

The Cookstown 100 is the oldest in Ireland. It was first held in 1922 on a 30-mile course near Stewartstown. The distance of the race has changed throughout the years, but it has been called the Cookstown 100 since 1930. In 1998, the race moved to its current 2.1-mile circuit.

The Cookstown 100 has been won by many famous riders, including Joey Dunlop, Ray McCullough, and Ryan Farquhar. The event has been cancelled a few times throughout history, due to reasons such as war, safety concerns, foot and mouth disease and of course the Northern Irish weather! Despite the cancellations, the Cookstown 100 remains an important part of Irish motorcycle racing and is now considered the official opener for the road racing season.

  • The Cookstown 100 is the oldest road race on the island of Ireland.
  • It was first held as a 30-mile event on Thursday, June 15, 1922.
  • Remarkably, it predates the Ulster Grand Prix, which began on Saturday, October 14, 1922, making the Cookstown 100 four months older.
  • Organized by the Cookstown and District Motor Cycle Club, the race initially took place on the Sherrygroom circuit near Stewartstown.
  • Over the years, the race distance increased from 30 miles to 70 miles and eventually to 100 miles.
  • With the Temple 100 no longer in existence, the Cookstown 100 now holds the distinction of being the oldest road race on the island of Ireland.

Riders with the most wins at Cookstown :

  • Ryan Farquhar – 26 wins (1996-2012)
  • Ray McCullough – 14 wins (1967-1979)
  • Joey Dunlop – 11 wins (1977-1998)
  • Robert Dunlop – 11 wins (1985-2008)
  • Phillip McCallen – 10 wins (1987-1996)

Davey Todd on TAS Racing BWM for 2024 NW200

Davey Todd with his superbike ready for the 2024 NW200

Davey Todd on TAS Racing BWM for 2024 NW200 :

PRESS RELEASE : DAVEY TODD ON TAS RACING MILKWAUKEE BMW FOR SUPERBIKE AND SUPERSTOCK RACES AT 2024 BRIGGS EQUIPMENT NORTH WEST 200 ON MAY 6-11

The Briggs Equipment North West 200 is delighted to announce three-time race winner Davey Todd will be on the grid during May 6-11 race week in the Superbike and Superstock classes aboard a Milwaukee liveried TAS Racing BMW.

“This has been something that I’ve discussed about doing with Philip Neill from TAS Racing for a few years and having previously had some personal support from Milwaukee – we now arrive at the NW200 as a strong team on BMW’s M1000RRs. “ Todd said.

“I’ve seen first-hand the success of both the team and the M1000RR on the roads, so it’s my plan to be part of that success story, and no better place than in front of the Irish fans at the NW200. It’s a great event with big atmosphere, and speed, on those straights into Coleraine and Portrush. The Milwaukee BMWs will be just the job.”

“Davey is a rider who we have admired for a number of seasons, both in British championship and and also on the International Roads.” Dale McIlveen of Milwaukee explained.

“The North West has a big impact on the local economy as Ireland’s largest outdoor sporting event – so in terms of brand presence, we cannot wait to see him aboard Milwaukee branded machinery in front of all those local and international fans.”

“It’s no secret the NW200 has always been one of our favourite events and with 2024 being our 25th anniversary season, we look forward to this year’s event more than ever. “ TAS Racing team boss, Phillip Neill said.

“To achieve 30 victories around the North West Triangle with a selection of fantastic riders is a dream come true for both my father and I. We now look forward to trying to add to that number this year on a range of Milwaukee BMW machinery. On reaching this landmark, we are more aware than ever of the importance of a great team, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our team members and sponsors who have quite simply made this success possible.”

Davey is an exciting prospect for us with already proven capabilities and we look forward to working with him this year together with continued support from Milwaukee and BMW Motorrad.”

“The Briggs Equipment North West 200 has enjoyed a long relationship with Hector and Philip Neill’s TAS Racing team and we look forward to having the team back on the grid with us in 2024 with Davey Todd onboard the Milwaukee BMW. A top team with a top rider.”

Lee Johnston Returns for 2024 Isle of Man TT

Lee Johnston Returns for 2024 Isle of Man TT

Lee Johnston Returns for 2024 Isle of Man TT :

Lee Johnston has announced he will return to the Isle of Man for the 2024 TT Races with Ashcourt Racing.

Johnston missed the 2023 event due to life-threatening injuries sustained at the 2023 North West 200. This year his TT Campaign will feature a Honda CBR1000RR-R SP for the Superbike and Superstock events and an Aprilia RS 660 in the Supertwin class. His machine for the Supersport class is yet to be confirmed.

“It’s never good to miss a year at the TT, but even more so when the weather was as good as it was last year. The amount of track time and the sheer number of laps completed saw the game move on considerably. You’ve got to do 130mph+ now to win a Supersport race which is unreal.”

“I’m being realistic about it. This will be somewhat of a rebuilding year but I can’t wait to get back on my bike at the TT. Obviously I want to do as well as possible, particularly in the Supersport and Supertwin Races, but I want to enjoy it as well.”

Herbertson Signs for Burrows Engineering by RK Racing :

Burrows Engineering by RK Racing have announced via a Social Media Post that Dom ‘the Bomb’ Herbertson will be their representation for the 2024 Roads Season.

Burrows Engineering by RK Racing have announced that Dominic Herbertson has signed with the team for the 2024 season, and is set to contest every solo class at this year’s Isle of Man TT Races.

Herbertson replaces the outgoing Mike Browne and will ride the team’s BMW M 1000 RR in the RST Superbike, RL360 Superstock and Milwaukee Senior TT Races, as well as a Yamaha YZF-R6 in the two Monster Energy Supersport Races. The team have also confirmed they’ll contest the two Carole Nash Supertwin Races with the popular 32-year-old.

Led by Team Principal and former TT racer John Burrows, the decision to sign an established rider in Herbertson – who lapped at over 130mph average for the first time in 2023 – marks a move away from the team’s position of fielding riders in the earlier stages of their road racing careers, with the likes of Dan Kneen, Jamie Hamilton, Malachi Mitchell-Thomas, Davey Todd and Browne all being brought through the ranks with Burrows’ highly-professional outfit.

The 2023 Motorcycle Racing Season came to a glorious conclusion with a spectacular awards night at the La Mon House Hotel on Friday, 12th January, 2024. The event honoured the top three riders in each of the classes that make up the USBK Championship, as well as the recipients of the special MCUI awards. The awards night was a fitting tribute to the passion, talent, and dedication of the Irish motorcycling community.

The Special MCUI Awards :

In addition to the USBK champions, the awards night also recognized the outstanding achievements and contributions of some of the legends and heroes of Irish motorcycling. The special MCUI awards were presented to the following recipients:

  • Bertie Mann Award: This award, named after the late Bertie Mann, who was a pioneer and a visionary in Irish motorcycling, was given to Ivan Davidson for his lifetime of work within motorcycling. He is widely respected and admired for his knowledge, experience, and passion for motorcycling.

Get Started in Irish Sidecar Racing :

The MCI have announced than an insurance policy has been agreed and tat gives the go ahead to most disciplines to get back out on their respective circuits.

The Irish Sidecar Club and the Irish Sidecar and Motorcycle Racing Supporters Club have issued a press release via Facebook inviting anyone with a genuine desire to get involved in sidecar racing to get in touch and get things in motion to make that happen.

If you have an interest in racing the three wheelers then now may well be the time to step up and make it happen.

Motorcycle Union of Ireland Insurance Update

Motorcycle Union of Ireland Insurance Update :

Some bitter sweet news from Motorcycling Ireland in the latest update on the insurance situation in the Republic of Ireland.

The sweet news is an insurance policy has been put forward and has been accepted by the MCI. This will see the return of motorcycle sports in Ireland.

However, the bitter taste, of this policy is that it does not cover road racing or motocross events that are held on coillte (state owned forestry land). A question mark is also over drag racing events in Cork.

Further details are expected from Motorcycling Ireland in the coming days. One interesting rumour to be confirmed – or hopefully not – is that this policy constitutes a two year deal. If that is indeed the case then there will be no road racing events in 2025, making 2026 the earliest road racing (or events on coillte) could return to the South. If that were to be true, is it even likely that road racing will return, or is it now destined to be a legend – a story of the good old days – the golden age? I really, genuinely hope not.

2023 saw no motorcycle sporting events in Ireland due to the lack of insurance cover. Huge work has went on in the background by Motorcycling Ireland to even get a quote on the table, so to have one on that table and accepted as adequate and affordable is a superb achievement.

The last road race in the South was the 2022 Faugheen 50.
