Friday Practice & Qualifying: Browne Sets the Standard

The opening day of the 62nd Tandragee 100 presented competitors with a day of almost uninterrupted sunshine. That however brought its own problems as the evening progressed the sun became a problem as it got lower in the beautiful early summer sky. That coupled with an incident involving a belligerent spectator meant that the two Friday evening races were unfortunately cancelled.

In the premier Supersport qualifying session, Corkโ€™s Michael Browne demonstrated exceptional form aboard the Boyce Precision Engineering/Russell Racing Yamaha. Browne was the only rider to break the three-minute barrier, securing pole position with a commanding lap ofย 2:59.629.

Multi-time Isle of Man TT winner Michael Dunlop MBE spearheaded the chase, qualifying second with a :03.00.084, while Skerries rider Michael Sweeney completed the front row (3:02.944).

Saturday Race Day: Dunlop Asserts Dominance

Saturdayโ€™s race programme unfolded underneath darker skies. The uninterrupted blue skies were replaced with grey clouds and sporadic showers, numerous red flags peppered the racing leading to the Classics getting cancelled and cut lap racing as the programme progressed. There was very little the Armagh Club could do other than keep the cogs moving, get the lack of adhesion flags out and squeeze as much racing in as they could into what was an already busy schedule.

McCrumโ€™s Motorcycles Open Race

The opening big-bike contest initially looked to be Browneโ€™s for the taking. The Yamaha rider launched cleanly to establish a 2.388-second advantage by the start of the second lap. However, Dunlop utilized the sheer power of his MD Racing BMW to systematically erode the deficit. By lap five, Dunlop executed a decisive pass, pulling clear to secure his 131st Irish National road race victory by a margin of 4.169 seconds. Isle of Man star Conor Cummins delivered a calculated performance to claim the final step on the podium.

Retirements: Technical issues forced both Michael Sweeney and Kevin Keyes out of the running early in the contest, disrupting what had promised to be a multi-rider battle for the podium.

Rapid International Supersport Race

The Supersport race turned into a tactical chess match before it was prematurely halted. Spotting a drying line on an otherwise damp circuit, Dunlop took a calculated gamble on slick tyres. Browne took the initial holeshot, leveraging his intermediate setup to build a 1.9-second lead on lap one.

As the track dried, Dunlopโ€™s tyre choice paid dividends. He overhauled Browne on the third lap. Moments later, a red flag brought out by an incident on track forced officials to declare the result based on lap three positions. Dunlop was awarded the victoryโ€”his 132nd national winโ€”ahead of Browne, with Shaun Anderson finishing a strong third.

Around A Pound Tandragee 100 Feature Race

Regulated to a four-lap sprint, the Grand Final renewed the duel between Browne and Dunlop. Browne matched Dunlopโ€™s pace through the opening sectors, but a masterclass final lap from Dunlop settled the encounter.

Dunlop registered a blistering 2:52.6 lap on his Superstock-spec BMW to cross the line ahead of Browne, who joined the elite sub-2m54s club around the Armagh course. Michael Sweeney rebounded from his earlier Open race retirement to secure a resilient third-place finish.
