Motorcycle Union of Ireland Insurance Update

Motorcycling Ireland has accepted an insurance policy, allowing the return of motorcycle sports in Ireland. However, the policy does not cover road racing or motocross events held on coillte land. Further details are expected in the coming days. There are rumors that this policy is a two-year deal, which could mean no road racing events in 2025. The last road race in the South was the 2022 Faugheen 50

Motorcycle Union of Ireland Insurance Update :

Some bitter sweet news from Motorcycling Ireland in the latest update on the insurance situation in the Republic of Ireland.

The sweet news is an insurance policy has been put forward and has been accepted by the MCI. This will see the return of motorcycle sports in Ireland.

However, the bitter taste, of this policy is that it does not cover road racing or motocross events that are held on coillte (state owned forestry land). A question mark is also over drag racing events in Cork.

Further details are expected from Motorcycling Ireland in the coming days. One interesting rumour to be confirmed – or hopefully not – is that this policy constitutes a two year deal. If that is indeed the case then there will be no road racing events in 2025, making 2026 the earliest road racing (or events on coillte) could return to the South. If that were to be true, is it even likely that road racing will return, or is it now destined to be a legend – a story of the good old days – the golden age? I really, genuinely hope not.

2023 saw no motorcycle sporting events in Ireland due to the lack of insurance cover. Huge work has went on in the background by Motorcycling Ireland to even get a quote on the table, so to have one on that table and accepted as adequate and affordable is a superb achievement.

The last road race in the South was the 2022 Faugheen 50.

2022 had a busy calendar, but then before that things were put on hold courtesy of Covid, with only the Cookstown 100 being the only road racing event on the island during the pandemic.

The board of Motorcycling Ireland last night met to discuss and vote on the proposal of whether to accept the insurance quotation offered to us. Each convenor had many points to bring to the table from their clubs, which were discussed at length. Following this, a vote was held by the convenors who voted in line with the majority of their clubs.

The vote went in favour of accepting the insurance proposal by majority.

We thank you for your support in this matter.

A further statement with details on licensing, start permissions, affiliations, fundraising and other topics will be released in the coming days, and we thank you in advance for your patience in this. We have one chance to get this right, and it needs further discussion to be finalised.

This is a positive step for the future of racing, and we will continue to work with all clubs to make sure it is as successful as possible.

Yours in Sport

Board of Motorcycling Ireland.
