2024 North West 200 : 9th May 2024 : Evening Race Session : (200 + Photos)
The 2024 North West 200 took place over the race week of 6th – 11th May 2024 on the sun kissed North Coast of Northern Ireland.
Due to the May Day Bank Holiday and a clash with the BSB Calendar a slight change was implemented to the NW200 Schedule in that the traditional Tuesday Practice Session was moved to Wednesday. From there it was onto Thursday for another day time practice session and then the evening’s race session.
Wednesday 8th May 2024 Practice Session :
Wednesday’s practice laid down the cards for what the week had ahead with Glen Irwin lapping inside the course record on the Superbike on the first practice session on the ‘big’ bikes! The Carrickfergus man on the Hager PBM Ducati completed his lap at an average speed of 124.895mph, 0.2 seconds quicker than Peter Hickman’s official lap record speed of 124.799mph.

- The Supertwin qualifying session was cut short due to a red flag incident.
Thursday 9th May 2024 Practice Session :
With rain overnight, the track was wet and damp in places for the start of Thursday’s Practice Session. However the weather was perfect from early on and it did not take too long for the circuit to dry out. From here it was a mixed morning, on one hand there were three red flags, one during the Supersports, one during the Superstocks and one in the Supertwin Session, thankfully none of the incidents involved serious injuries.
On the other hand then there were records getting smashed. Glenn Irwin took almost 2 seconds of the lap record, although this is not an official record, as that can only be made or taken during racing and with Davey Todd hitting 209.8 mph at the speed trap it has set the scene perfectly for an exceptionally high level of racing for the Thursday and Saturday sessions.
The Official North West 200 issued the following statement in relation to the Practice Session’s Red Flags :
“During today’s qualifying sessions there were three red flag incidents involving three competitors.
The first occurred in the Supersport session at Trolans, the second at Millbank Avenue in the Superstock qualifying and the third at Quarry Hill during the final Supertwins session.
The information from the NW200 medical team indicates none of the competitors sustained serious injuries but two have been taken to Causeway Hospital for assessment and treatment.”

Thursday 9th May 2024 Race Results :
Three four lap races were the order of the day for Thursday night’s racing.
First up was the newest edition to the schedule, the Superbike race and for the first three laps it was a head to head flip of the coin between Davey Todd on the BMW and Glenn Irwin on the Ducati. At the chequered flag it was Glenn Irwin who took the spoils completing his ninth consecutive Superbike win, opening the door for a record 10 on the trot on Saturday.
Supersports were second on the schedule and Davey Todd took an early lead, however Adam McLean lost it into York Corner and wiped Todd out, both riders are out of the race and it is Richard Cooper who comes from fourth to being in the lead by University. That lead evolved as the race progressed and ultimately he was just too much for the rest of the field. Behind him though was a big battle between Peter Hickman and Michael Dunlop, with Hicky taking the second spot with just over 0.3s ahead of MD.
The final race of the evening was back to the big machines and it was the turn of the Superstockers. Davey Todd and Adam McLean, both a bit tender from the race incident in Race 2 started. It was Davey Todd and Dean Harrison duelling it out for the top spot in this race, but a bad line at Magherbouy Chicane left the door open for Davey Todd who took the win by almost 7 seconds. Michael Dunlop took the final spot on the podium, with James Hiller and John McGuinness having their own battle for fourth and fifth, ultimately only being separated by just over 0.2s.
A brilliant night’s racing and a great prelude to Race Day Saturday!

Saturday 11th May 2024 Race Results :
A gorgeous day on the North Coast is all that needs to be said. Wall to wall sunshine and first race temperature of 17 degrees Celsius. A massive crowd lined the hedges and filled the grandstands with road racing fans, young and old with packed lunches and suncream the essentials for the day.
MILLTOWN SERVICE STATION SUPERTWIN RACE (4 LAPS) :
First out were the Supertwins, and what a brilliant start to race day. For the first couple of laps it was Cooper, Hickman and McWilliams duelling amongst each other for the top three spots. The tow into the slip streams being pivotal as the top three bounced all around the podium positions, however by lap three it was down to Cooper and Hickman for the top spot and Mike Browne and Jeremy McWilliams for the third step. In the end Browne took third and Hickman took the win after a masterful display of tactics, taking Cooper on the final stages of the last lap and with his expertise on the Coast Road Section was able to hold off the 47 bike until the chequered flag.
ANCHOR BAR SUPERBIKE RACE (6 LAPS) :
After a delay following the end of Race 1, due to a ‘non race incident’ involving ‘crowd management’ things got moving again at around 12:20 for the first of the days Superbikes races.
From the outset this motorcycle race was like a game of chess between Glenn Irwin and Davey Todd.
Michael Dunlop landed himself a 10 second penalty for not taking one of the chicanes properly, but what looked like a certain podium for Peter Hickman who ran 4th on the road wasn’t to be as he retired on the final lap and Michael Dunlop pushed hard to make up the time, and with Hicky’s retirement he took the final step on the podium.
Dean Harrison also had an early mistake which left him out of the race by driving straight on towards the end of lap 2 and ending up in Pit Lane. The second factory Honda of John McGuinness was also a retirement.
Davey Todd and Glenn Irwin paced each other throughout the race swapping positions multiple times throughout the 6 laps and by the final stages it really was a flip of a coin as to who would take the win, but as the pair reached Juniper Chicane they approached a rear marker, Glenn Irwin made it past with little effect however Davey Todd has his line totally thrown off and the loss of time was irrecoverable, handing Glenn Irwin his record breaking, record making tenth (in a row) Superbike win at the NW200 making him the event’s most successful Superbike rider.
TIDES RESTAURANT SUPERSPORT RACE (6 LAPS) :
No delays this time round, which got us straight into Race 3 and that same name that has been at the top all day was there again. Davey Todd. It should be no shock either that the other name at the top of this category was Richard Cooper.
The top two again engaged in another fantastic duel, Davey Todd leading for the first four laps, with Cooper taking the lead on lap 5, however for the entire duration of the race it was as if the rider in second place was just riding the tyre of the man in front.
Behind them was another thoroughly engaging battle for third between Mike Browne and Michael Dunlop. They seemed to be even closer to each other than Todd and Cooper, if that is even possible.
Conor Cummins and Paul Jordan also ran a brilliant race, but as the last lap took shape Davey Todd was in the lead at the Ballysally Roundabout. At the first opportunity Cooper retook the lead and at the same time Michael Dunlop took up third.
By the time the leaders were at Magherabouy Chicane Dunlop and Browne were on their tails, and by the time Juniper Chicane was negotiated it was Davey Todd who was back in front and took the win from Cooper. Michael Dunlop completed the podium.
CP HIRE SUPERSTOCK RACE (6 LAPS) :
Just prior to the race start we got to see a quick interview with Peter Hickman and Mervyn Whyte, from which we learnt Hickman’s DNF was due to running out fuel. His bike can not complete 6 full laps with the standard tank so he has had to lean out the fuel in an attempt to find that extra half a lap.
Davey Todd got a superb start, again, with Dean Harrison taking second place on the initial run out on lap one, and by Ballysally Roundabout Deano was out in front. Unfortunately prior to the end of the lap one a red flag stopped the race.
Upon the restart Michael Dunlop had his bike removed from the grid for failing to complete the sighting lap. He was far from happy. On the green light it was that man Davey Todd again, Dean Harrison getting get the same start as the first attempt but quickly got himself into P2. Hicky took his machine with the tiny tank into third, James Hiller and John McGuiness were also up close with the top group.
By the halfway Davey Todd appeared to be out of the danger zone for being open to the slipstream. Dean Harrison had maintained second but Hickman was still sitting comfortably with me, maybe trying to maintain fuel.
James Hiller and John McGuiness were having a great battle for fourth and fifth, Kostamo, Jordan, Hutchinson, Herbertson and Neve completed the top 10 at the halfway point.
With two laps remaining the top three remained unchanged but John McGuinness had worked his way up to fourth, Hillier remained in 5th, Herbsertson had moved up to eigth, and Hicky put in the fastest lap of the race to that point and was sitting firmly on his rear tyre, very obviously with his eye on the second step. By the end of the lap Dean Harrison was a retirement bumping McGuinness up to third but James Hiller obviously had a taste for that podium spot too and by the final lap Hiller had snapped that third place.
On the final lap the quality of Davey Todd continued to shine and he took another win. Hickman’s fuel lasted to take second place and John McGuinness snatched third in the final stages to get his first NW200 podium since 2012! The embrace between John and Davey at the winners’ enclosure was something to behold. The paddock could not have been happier to welcome John in. Brilliant, brilliant stuff!
JOHN M PATTERSON SUPERTWIN RACE (4 LAPS) :
From the outset Cooper set out his stall into first position with Jeremy McWilliams in second and Peter Hickman in third. Hicky’s third though was a long way back and for at least half the race it was Cooper and McWilliams exchanging positions with Hickman pushing his stunning Swan Yamaha machine until the end of lap three when he took McWilliams second spot and started pushing Cooper hard.
In the next group Browne, Elkin, Furber, Rutter, Sweeney, McCoy and Graham made up the top 10.
For the final lap it was a lesson in tactics from Hicky, taking first from Cooper and then pulling away up the Coast Road, through Juniper Chicane, taking his lead to about five bike lengths and crossing the line in a commanding position. That in no way takes away from the race ran by Cooper, 0.855 seconds is all that kept him off the top spot, in what must have felt like deja-vu to him from the first race.
Jeremy McWilliams completed the podium of a superb Supertwin race, and will get him into the Winner’s Tent tonight for a beer – apparently completing a promise he made the night before! Great stuff.
MERROW HOTEL AND SPA SUPERBIKE RACE (6 LAPS) :
The Finale of the 2024 North West 200.
Glenn Irwin wants it, Davey Todd wants it, Michael Dunlop wants it, everyone wants it, but who is going to take the spoils?
Peter Hickman did not compete in the Finale as he had already reached the five race limit for the day.
From the green light it was Davey Todd who shot off into an early lead, Glenn Irwin was second with Dean Harrison in third. Michael Dunlop didn’t get a great start but quickly got up to fourth by the link road. James Hiller missed the chicane and nearly sucked Michael Rutter into following him. By the time Portrush was on the horizon John McGuinness and Michael Rutter had their own battle ongoing.
At the end of the first lap the top three remained unchanged, with Davey Todd pushing and Glenn Irwin chasing and Dean Harrison keeping a really strong pace on his Superstock Honda.
At the end of the second lap still nothing had changed in the top three, the top ten consisted of Dunlop, McGuiness, Rutter, Hillier, Neve, Browne and Jordan. Unfortunately on the third lap John McGuinness’ machine blew up at the Link Road putting him out of the race. At the end of lap three Glenn Irwin took the lead for the first time, making his move at Juniper Chicane.
James Hillier missed the chicane on lap 4, and at the top of field it remained Irwin then Todd, you could see that Davey Todd was working out his tactics and how he could nip the win from underneath Glenn Irwin. Dean Harrison’s superstock machine was still preforming exceptionally and he remained with the top two. As they exited Station Todd flew past Irwin, but Irwin snatched it back at the Link Road. It really was just a case of back and forth.
By lap 5 Dunlop, Rutter, Jordan and Browne were having a private battle, Todd and Irwin both wanted the lead and Harrison was pacing the pair rather exceptionally.
The final lap had Irwin ahead of Todd and it all came down to where and when to make his move. Todd was exceptional again at Station and towards University the two machines were side by side. With another few back and forth swaps between the two Todd was right there at Metropole and Juniper looked to be the key. It was not to be for Davey Todd.
In the final sections it was Glenn Irwin who held on taking his 11th Superbike win on the trot, Davey Todd second, Dean Harrison completing the podium on his stock machine. Dunlop, Jordan, Rutter, Neve, Browne, Hillier and Herbertson completed the top 10.
All in all an excellent day’s racing with some real quality shown across all the classes. An absolute spectacle with crowds lining the course in numbers that haven’t been seen in a decade. Road racing shown in all its glory on the Northern Irish North Coast.
