It is with a heavy heart that the Isle of Man TT Races can confirm the loss of Davy Morgan following an incident on the final lap of the first Supersport Race of the 2022 Isle of Man TT Races.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Davy’s partner Trudy, his family, loved ones, and friends.

Davy was a stalwart of the TT paddock, with 2022 marking 20 years since he first competed in the Isle of Man TT Races. Today’s Supersport Race was his 80th TT race start.

His distinctive pink helmet was a regular and recognisable sight within road racing, having competed in hundreds of races across the Manx Grand Prix, Classic TT, Southern 100, North West 200, Ulster Grand Prix, Macau Grand Prix, Oliver’s Mount, and Irish national races, with numerous podiums and race victories along the way.

Aged 52, Davy had contemplated walking away from the sport in recent years, but the COVID-enforced break had shown him what a life without racing would be like.

Speaking in 2020, he said, ‘being away from racing has given me the chance to reflect on what motorbike racing means to me, so I’ve no desire to retire from the sport for a while yet, and it’s been a big part of my life for 27 years now’.

‘I’ve had the opportunity to see what it would be like without motorbikes, and I’m glad I had that because if I’d decided that I was finished, I’d have been kicking myself!’

Davy was well-respected and highly-experienced competitor. As a result, his peers looked up to him, learned from him, and loved to race with him. He will be sorely missed.

STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE ISLE OF MAN TT RACES

On Saturday 4th June during the opening lap of the first Sidecar Race of the 2022 Isle of Man TT Races, an accident at Ago’s Leap involving outfit number 21 of César Chanal and Olivier Lavorel resulted in the death of one of the competitors.

The race was stopped with the deployment of full-course red flags, and medical personnel, a Travelling Marshal, and the emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene.

One of the competitors sustained injuries that would not support life and was sadly declared dead at the scene. The second competitor was unconscious with severe injuries.

The injured competitor was treated at the roadside before being transferred to Noble’s Hospital, and then airlifted to a specialist hospital in Liverpool to receive treatment.

An initial identification procedure was conducted using established procedures and would appear to have resulted in a mistaken identification.

We now believe it was César Chanal who died at the scene of the accident on Saturday 4th June. Olivier remains in a critical condition and continues to receive treatment.

Both competitors’ families have been informed.

A thorough review of the processes relating to the identification of competitors will take place in due course.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of both Olivier and César at this truly devastating time.

We ask that people do not speculate on social media.

Mark Purslow : Statement Issued from the Isle of Man TT Races – 01/06/2022

The Isle of Man TT Races are deeply saddened by the passing of Mark Purslow following an incident in this evening’s qualifying session for the 2022 Isle of Man TT Races.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to Mark’s family, loved ones, and friends.

2022 was Mark’s second appearance at the Isle of Man TT Races, having previously contested the Supersport and Lightweight races in 2017. He had graduated from the Manx Grand Prix where he had won the 2015 Lightweight Race on his debut, and he had also competed at the Classic TT securing a best finish of 14th in the 2019 Junior Classic TT.

Mark grew up around racing and was inspired by his father’s love of the sport. He typified the spirit of the privateer TT racer, preparing his own machinery with the support of friends and family.

Road racing was his passion – competing in Northern Ireland and Europe in the International Road Racing Championship – but becoming a TT racer was a life’s ambition that represented the ultimate personal challenge.

The TT Races will continue – but always with Mark in mind.

STATEMENT ISSUED FROM THE ISLE OF MAN TT RACES

The Isle of Man TT Races regrets to confirm that Mark Purslow, 29, from Llanon, Ceredigion was killed in an incident during the fourth qualifying session of the 2022 Isle of Man TT Races. The accident occurred at Ballagarey, before the fourth mile marker, on his third lap of the session.

Mark made his first appearance on the TT Mountain Course at the 2015 Manx Grand Prix where he won the Lightweight Race on his debut. He graduated to the Isle of Man TT Races in 2017, competing in the Supersport and Lightweight classes – 2022 was his second TT.

Mark was also an experienced classic racer, competing at the Classic TT in 2016, 2018, and 2019, with a best result of 14th in the 2019 Junior Classic TT.

Mark had set his fastest ever lap of the TT Mountain Course at 120.86mph earlier in the session, his first lap in excess of 120mph.

The Isle of Man TT Races pass on their deepest sympathy to Mark’s family, friends, and loved ones.

Road Racing Flags

Road Racing Flags :

If you are new to road racing/ motorsports then you may wonder how the Flags work and what they mean.

Flags are controlled by Flag Marshals.

Flag Marshals undergo official training, and must pass that training.

Each Course will have numerous Flag Marshals and at least a Chief Flag Marshal.

Each Flag Marshal will be able to see the next Flag Marshal on the Course – and will be able to feed information of them.

Flag Marshals watch the bikes pass them and then to the next Flag Marshal – not the approach of the bikes.

Flag Marshals are responsible for warning approaching riders of anything of note on the Course between them and the next Flag Marshal on the Course – in the Course Direction.

Flag Marshals will only give a red flag on the direction of the Clerk of the Course. The red flag will then travel backwards round the Course – because as outlined above the Flag Marshal watches the Marshal in front of him, on seeing a red flag will the put out their own red flag, the process repeats and the flag will be put up reversing around the Course – this means approaching riders get the notification.

Flag Marshals will generally be wearing a white coat.

Isle of Man TT Course Map :

No doubt you will have heard of the TT, and no doubt you will have heard of some of the Milestones and way markers throughout the Course, but where are they?

Bray Hill, Quarterbridge, Joey’s, Glen Helen, Greg-Ny-Baa, Gooseneck, Windy Corner and the Mountain Mile will all sound familiar to most TT followers, but if you haven’t made it over to the Island then it may all seem a little hard to follow, especially when you consider there is over 37 miles of track to learn and maybe 6 laps of that that Circuit to follow.

So where is where?

Hopefully these next series of maps and images will help you understand the Course and help in your understanding when listening to the commentary on Manx Radio, watching the Live Coverage on TT+, or catching up with the highlight shows on ITV4.

2022 Post-TT Races Schedule :

1991 saw a new event added to the Billown Course. The “Isle of Man Steam Packet Company National Road Races’ were introduced to provide entertainment for enthusiasts who were staying on the Island after the end of the TT Races, as it was at the time proving impossible to ‘evacuate the many thousands of bikers in a day or two’, as once was the case.

The Steam Packet Company requested Southern ‘100’ Racing to organise a three-race programme catering for machines ranging from 125cc to 750cc, with practicing taking place in the afternoon and racing, early evening. The calibre of the entry was first class, for the three classes, 125cc and 400cc Supersport; 250cc and 350cc, followed by the 750s, competing for a prize fund which stood at over £5,000. In all ninety-nine entries were received.

The discussions resulting in the inaugural event being run on Saturday 8th June 1991, with the ‘Island’s Lifeline’ remaining title sponsors to 2007.

2008 and 2009 saw the Lightweight (250cc) and Ultra-Lightweight (125cc) races being elevated to TT Status, reverting to the Post TT Road Races in 2010, headline sponsors have included, Manx Telecom, Metzeler Tyres; Radcliffe Butchers; Colas (IOM) Ltd and DAO Holdings Ltd.

The three-race format has continued since, adjusting the classes to suit changes in rules and regulations, with 600cc, 650cc and 1100cc machines being catered for at the present time.

2022 Pre-TT Classic Races Schedule :

The Blackford Pre-TT Classic Road Races will run from 27th May – 30th May 2022 with racing happening on 27th, 28th and 30th May 2022 at the Billown Circuit.

The Pre-TT Classic Road Races came into being in 1988 at the request of the then TT organisers, the then Auto Cycle Union, Classics having first appeared on the Billown course twelve months earlier at the popular Southern ‘100’ Road Races.’ The first TT Classic Races were held on the 31^st May1988, the meeting consisting of four races, 250cc/350c; 500cc; Unlimited and Sidecars and attracted 115 entries in all.

Honour of being the first race winner went to Graham Godward of Royston in Hertfordshire, riding a 350cc Aermacchi, whilst the 250cc category was dominated by ‘local’ classic man Mike Cain from Onchan on his 250cc Suzuki. Dave Pither, Seeley Matchless took the 500cc race from Richard Swallow on Syd Lawton’s Aermacchi with Alan Dugdale third. Riding a BSA Metisse, Stroud’s Robert Price finished first in the Unlimited race, whilst the controversial MV Agusta sidecar outfit of Mark Kay and Richard Battisson took the chequered flag in the final race of the day. The Classics had arrived at Billown!

Thirty plus years on, the Blackford’s Pre-TT Classic Road Races is rated as one of the most popular and ‘must do’ events in the annual Classic calendar attracting well over 250 entries for its nine-race event.
