Dao Racing and Dean Harrison have issued a joint statements on the end of their contract from 2024.

Good luck to Dean and Dao in whatever comes next and I look forward to seeing both back on the Isle of Man in 2024 with a new team for Dean and a new rider for Dao.

Following a memorable 8 years racing together, BSB and roads rider Dean Harrison and DAO Racing will not be moving into the 2024 season together.

Team Manager Jonny Bagnall:

‘Dean’s contract was due to end at the end of 2023 as part of his two year contract. During negotiations, we haven’t been able to agree on a suitable deal. Therefore we came to this mutual decision on both parties.’

It has been a fantastic 8 years with Dean, we’ve grown together, won together and now it has obviously come to the time for us to go our different ways.
We wish him all the best for the future.’

Dean Harrison, rider:

‘Genuinely this is a sad choice to make, that didn’t come easy. You get close to your team, care about everyone and don’t want to upset anyone.

I don’t call racing a career, I see it as a journey. You go from place to place, you have your ups and your downs, and I’m almost 35 now.

DAO Racing is one of the best teams in the paddock and in some ways I’d be silly to leave it.
I’ve been on the Kawasaki for 8 years now and what Clarissa and Sommai have done for me I’m so grateful for and the opportunities I’ve had.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of these last 8 years.’

Motorcycling Ireland New Board Announced :

Motorcycling Ireland new President Dave McCann has released a statement following the EGM which was held on 19th July 2023.

Hi all, as you may know, the MCI EGM went ahead last week, and a new Board was elected. New President Dave McCann has issued this initial statement, more to follow.

On behalf of the new board of Management of Motorcycling Ireland, I would like to thank all of our affiliated clubs for attending and voting at the EGM last Wednesday the 19th of July.

We thank you for your support and the trust you have shown in us as we move forward together to address the issue’s we all currently face as clubs, competitors, officials, marshals and supporters.

Obviously, insurance is one of our biggest issues and to that end we have already established communication with the industry and will appoint a sub-committee to manage the difficult task ahead. We will update the clubs again next weekend.

Southern 100 Statement re Incident 11/07/2023 : Alan Conor and Liam Clarke

STATEMENT ISSUED FROM THE SOUTHERN 100

The Southern 100 Club have issued a statement in relation to the incident occurring on 11th July 2023 on their official Facebook page.

It is with great sadness that the Southern 100 Road Racing Club can confirm that rider Alan Connor, aged 50 from County Meath was killed in the serious incident that occurred on the final lap of Tuesday evening’s 1100cc Practice Session of the 2023 Southern 100 Races. It is with a deep sense of sorrow that the Southern 100 can further confirm that this incident also sadly resulted in the fatality of race marshal Liam Clarke, aged 66, from Wigan.

Alan was an experienced Southern 100 competitor, having made his Billown Course debut in 2017. Alan was known by many for his blue and yellow leathers and competed regularly at the Ulster Grand Prix and North West 200. Alan was also a stalwart of the Mountain Course, making his debut in the 2003 Manx Grand Prix, before graduating to the Isle of Man TT Races where he recorded 36 race finishes and achieved a fastest lap of 119.304mph.

Liam was an experienced marshal that had travelled over to the Isle of Man for the event. Although the 2023 meeting was his first time marshalling on the Billown Course, Liam had previously marshalled across other motorsport events including the 2022 Isle of Man TT Races.

The loss of both Alan and Liam is felt deeply amongst the racing community. The Southern 100 Road Racing Club pass on their deepest sympathy to Alan and Liam’s families, loved ones, and friends.

2023 Southern 100 Cancelled

2023 Southern 100 Cancelled :

Following a tragic incident at the 2023 Southern 100 Road Races on 11th July where a Marshal and Rider sadly lost their lives in an incident involving two rider, a Marshal and member of the public the remainder of the event has been cancelled.

Thoughts and prayers go to the friends and families of all of those affected by the tragedy

The Southern 100 Club have issued a statement in relation to the incident and also in showing their appreciation for the support shown by the road racing fraternity.

APPRECIATION FROM SOUTHERN 100 CLUB

The Southern 100 Motorcycle Racing Club would like to express its sincere thanks and appreciation of all the kind messages of support and understanding that have been received since the sad and very traumatic incident during practice for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 Road Races on Tuesday evening 11^th July which resulted in this year’s event being cancelled.

As promoters, we are extremely grateful to everyone who have been involved in the 2023 Southern 100 for the time, hard work, and dedication in the preparation, running of the event and continued help and assistance as we bring this year’s event to a close after the traumatic Tuesday evening.

To all involved with the incident on the By-Pass we thank you for your professionalism and dedication to your duties, we will be for ever grateful.

To the families and friends of the rider and marshal who died we offer our sincere condolences and to the families and friends of the rider and spectator injured a speedy and full recovery.

Skerries 100 Bikefest 2023

Skerries 100 Bikefest 2023 :

The Loughshinny Motorcycle Supports Club have announced an event in lieu of the Skerries 100 Road Races.

The Road Races have unfortunately been cancelled for 2023 due to the lack of insurance cover for motorcycling events in Ireland.

In light of there being no insurance to run the Country Crest Skerries 100 Road Race, we have decided to run the Country Crest Skerries 100 BikeFest from Friday 30th June – Saturday 2nd July 2023.

This weekend is to celebrate the history of our sport, road races, and riders past and present.

The weekend will kick off on Friday 30th June with our Classic Charity Bike Run starting at the Skerries Mills, Co. Dublin K34K293 at 7 pm. (To Be Confirmed)

The weekend’s entertainment continues on Saturday 1st July with the Skerries Memories being held in the Ring Commons Sports Centre Co. Dublin K32X903 at 8pm. This will be an evening of anecdotes of 70+ years of the Skerries 100 and a chat show, hosted by Jack Corry.

On Sunday 2nd of July, as we will be holding a static bike show in the Ring Commons Sports Centre Co. Dublin K32X903 from 12 noon until 5 pm. This will include interviews with riders past and present, displays of bikes from all disciplines of motorcycling, food, and fun for all the family. Admission fee of €10 upon entry.

No Insurance for Irish Road Racing in 2023

No Insurance for Irish Road Racing in 2023 :

An MCI Directors meeting was held on Thursday 18th May 2023.

The affordability of insurance was discussed as part of the agenda. On the agenda was the financial viability of a recent quote. It was determined that this quote was not viable.

There will officially be no insurance cover for 2023.

An EGM will be held in 21 days.

Since the making of this announcement the Irish clubs have now all confirmed that their respective events have been cancelled for 2023.

The Kells Club have confirmed that there will be no 2023 Kells Road Races.

2023 Pre-TT Classic Races Schedule :

2023 Pre-TT Classic Races Schedule :

The 2023 Blackford Pre-TT Classic Road Races will run from Friday 26th May – Sunday 28th May 2023 with racing happening on all three dates.

Note though, that this year will see no Monday racing session for this event.

The Pre-TT Classic Road Races came into being in 1988 at the request of the then TT organisers, the then Auto Cycle Union, Classics having first appeared on the Billown course twelve months earlier at the popular Southern ‘100’ Road Races.’ The first TT Classic Races were held on the 31^st May1988, the meeting consisting of four races, 250cc/350c; 500cc; Unlimited and Sidecars and attracted 115 entries in all.

Honour of being the first race winner went to Graham Godward of Royston in Hertfordshire, riding a 350cc Aermacchi, whilst the 250cc category was dominated by ‘local’ classic man Mike Cain from Onchan on his 250cc Suzuki. Dave Pither, Seeley Matchless took the 500cc race from Richard Swallow on Syd Lawton’s Aermacchi with Alan Dugdale third. Riding a BSA Metisse, Stroud’s Robert Price finished first in the Unlimited race, whilst the controversial MV Agusta sidecar outfit of Mark Kay and Richard Battisson took the chequered flag in the final race of the day. The Classics had arrived at Billown!

Thirty plus years on, the Blackford’s Pre-TT Classic Road Races is rated as one of the most popular and ‘must do’ events in the annual Classic calendar attracting well over 250 entries for its nine-race event.

NW200 Statement over FHO Racing Withdrawal from 2023 Event :

As reported here, FHO Racing have withdrawn all entries from the 2023 NW200 Road Races following being disqualified from the Superbike Race on Thursday evening over an issue with the wheels on the BMW Racing M 1000 RR Superstock machine.

In the interests of fairness and completeness it is also important to cover the replying statement from the North West 200.

The Event Organisers have issued a statement explaining their situation :

STATEMENT FROM THE ORGANISERS OF THE fonaCAB AND NICHOLL OILS NORTH WEST 200 :

The technical regulations of the Motorcycle Union of Ireland (Ulster Centre), under which the fonaCAB and Nicholl Oils North West 200 is run, state that carbon wheels are not permitted for use at any MCUI road race event.

Those regulations, which are implemented by the MCUI Stewards of the Meeting, were approved by the sport’s governing body in January 2023 and published on the North West 200’s website at that stage.

The FHO Racing BMW team were informed by the MCUI’s Stewards after qualifying on Thursday afternoon that their riders, Peter Hickman and Josh Brookes, would be excluded from the Briggs Equipment Superstock race as their machines were fitted with carbon wheels.

The NW200 organisers were informed of the Steward’s decision, which is final and binding upon the event, at 21.30pm on Thursday night during the final Steward’s meeting.

No such action had been discussed with the NW200 organisers prior to this time despite the machines having been scrutineered on both Tuesday and Thursday morning.

We deeply regret the FHO Racing BMW team’s decision to withdraw from the event tonight as a result of this action, a sentiment we know will be shared by all NW200 race fans.

Peter Hickman was interviewed during the BBC coverage on Saturday’s event and made the point, ‘Just copy the TT’s Regulations.’ On this, I have to agree. Disqualifying a stock bike for running with stock wheels is just a nonsense. It’s a shame that that is how the event ended for FHO.

Hopefully FHO Racing return to the event and hopefully the MCUI take a look at the current regulations and either modernise them or bring them into line with the those of the TT.
