iOS 9.1 now available – Activates Apple News App for the UK

If you live in the UK, are an Apple user and have updated your gear to iOS9 you have probably been left wondering where on Earth is this news app I heard all about?

Apple released it to the US in iOS9 but to ensure it worked, allegedly, the rest of the world had to wait. (Workarounds did exist such as changing your phone’s region).

Well now the wait is officially over. Download and install iOS9.1 and you will be greater by that nice new shiny News app sitting right there on your homescreen!

Apple Acknowledge ‘Staingate’ and Will Repair Affected MacBook / MacBook Pros

If you are a MAcBook Pro with Retina Display owner you are probably aware of and may have even been affected by ‘Staingate.’

A deterioration / degradation of the anti reflective coating found on MacBook Pro Models with the Retina Display. Many theories have been bandied about in relation to how this occurs, but the important factor is that it does occur! However more importantly Apple have now accepted that it happens, and that it shouldn’t.

A repair program is now in place although not advertised in the way many other such programs are. Regardless it is there and if your MBP has been a victim of this, Apple should repair it, within three years from the date of original purchase, or one year from October 16, 2015, whichever is longer. Affected customers that have already incurred out-of-warranty costs may be eligible for a refund through AppleCare support.

Affected customers can book an appointment with a Genius Bar or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider to determine if their MacBook is eligible for coverage. Apple will not be posting the new Quality Program publicly on its support website, but should contact some potentially affected customers directly, according to sources.

This problem first surfaced around March 2015, but the good news is at least anyone affected will now be set right!

Wild Atlantic Way In 1 Week : Day 4 – Clifden to Sligo

Update : The YouTube video of Day 4 is now available for your viewing pleasure…Enjoy!

Thursday 30th July 2015 and we have safely arrived at Day 4 of the #WAWIn1Week Challenge, and at this stage of the game I am really enjoying myself.  The niggles I had over too much traffic and what can only be described as piss poor driving are still there but only so very slightly.  I am much more in tune with it, I know what to expect and to ‘get out and round’ as soon as possible and when ‘they’ are holding me up, to just relax and take in the breathtaking scenery.  All is good as we commence Day 4 and I am now finding it all going a little too quickly, when you look at the map this journey is not too far away from being completed and that’s actually a little sad.  So best get enjoying it!

Today the journey takes me from Clifton, Co. Galway to Sligo, Co. Sligo.  My panning stages have me to be believing this section of the route to be about 250 miles but if I have learnt one big thing from planning this trip is that I have always under estimated.  Normally by a good amount, Day 4 was actually closer to 300 miles, it was a long day and that was the greatest downfall of the day.

This is also the Day that instead of booking into a B&B I got a cracking deal on a hotel and stayed at the Yeats Country Hotel at Rosses Point, Sligo.  This is where the long day fell foul, this hotel is lovely and I would have loved to have factored in an earlier finish so I could have relaxed and enjoyed their facilities.  The bar looked great, there was a brilliant fitness centre and the restaurant as I was arriving was closing but the place smelled great!

I ended up with a curry chip from the only take-away in the town, a Chinese that was getting ready to close as well.  As I say that is the only disappointment and it was self made, I didn’t get enough time to enjoy this brilliant spot!

Although from the route above it looks like there are four signature points shown on this section there are again 3, the one closest to the bottom is just before Clifden and it was done the previous day (Derrigimlagh).

  1.  Killary Harbour.
  2. Keem Bay.
  3. Downpatrick Head.

Leatherman Crunch Unboxing

Most men love multitools. Β This is a fact. Β Simple. Β Need a present idea for a guy? Β Buy him a multitool, he will like it!

The same goes for motorcyclists, multitools rule. Β There are probably two big players currently on the market,

  1. Β Leatherman
  2. Gerber.

Personally I have both, I carry a Leatherman every where I go in work, and I have a Gerber which I carry in the car. Β I have another Leatherman which I keep in my tool box in the garage and is probably the most used thing in there! Β This feature covers the latest Leatherman I have acquired which is a Leatherman Crunch.

Anyone familiar with the Leatherman Range will be familiar with the almost standard set of pliers that pop out when the tool is unfolded. Β This is where the Crunch differs, instead of pliars you get a set of vice grips. Β There is also a screwdriver slot in the base, which takes any standard bit, or buy the Leatherman set if you desire.

I carry this tool with me on the bike, and I purposefully bought it for this reason, as I am off the opinion that whilst on the road Vice Grips will be far more useful than pliers, of course the grips can be used as a pliers as well, obviously you loose the needle nose feature.

Quality is top class, which is backed up by their Industry busting 25 year warranty. Β I need say no more other than if like me you are a Leatherman fan, consider this tool as a good way to expand your capabilities away from the needle nose pliers.

Wild Atlantic Way In 1 Week : Day 3– Ballybunion to Clifden

Update : The YouTube video of Day 3 is now available for your viewing pleasure…Enjoy!

Wednesday 29th July 2015 and we are at Day 3 of the #WAWIn1Week. Today’s route takes me from Ballybunion, Co. Kerry to Clifden, Co. Galway. My initial planning had worked today out to be somewhere around 205 miles, however again I underestimated a bit and it clocked up at closer to 270 miles.

WAWIn1Week – Ballybunion to Clifden – Day 3

One thing that makes this leg a little different is that you have the option of getting on a boat, this is a good idea as it will keep you away from Limerick, which is big, busy and is going to take up a good bit of time to pass through, either of the ferries will keep you motoring on and keep you on track staying on the coast.

It was another long day in the saddle, with few breaks, other than at the signature points, of which there were three today, namely :

  1.  Loop Head.
  2. Cliffs of Moher.
  3. Derrigimlagh.

At the moment there seems to be nothing you can do to get this update over the air other than keep trying.

In the meantime make sure your phone is backed up and all your important data saved by either preforming an iCloud Backup or a iTunes Backup, preferably both!

When you have got yourself backed up get yourself over to iTunes and try the software update from there, it is currently downloading without issue for me and numerous other users are reporting the same…

What time to download iOS9?

So what time should the world expect to be able to download iOS9?

Big question, and the truth is no one has that answer outside of Apple HQ.

However going in recent form here are my predictions :

USA :

Apple Inc. normally seeds iOS updates between 9 and 10 a.m. PST.

Eastern and Central time zones can then expect to get the updates from about 12 noon to about 1 p.m.

The Mountain time zone should be ok to start downloading the newest iOS update from about 11 a.m. up to 12 noon.
OUTSIDE USA :

London – 5 to 6 p.m.

Moscow – 8 to 9 p.m.

New Delhi – 9:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Shanghai – 12 midnight to 1 a.m.

Tokyo – 1 to 2 a.m.

Melbourne – 2 to 3 a.m.

Auckland – 4 to 5 a.m.
