2025 Southern 100 Road Races Summary :

Isle of Man : 7th – 10th July 2025

The Billown Course once again echoed with the roar of road racing machines this week, as the 2025 Southern 100 – ‘The Friendly Races’, delivered two days of pure thrills on Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th July.  After a frustrating start to the event, with Monday’s practice and Tuesday’s scheduled races heavily impacted by poor weather conditions, the resilient Manx spirit prevailed, and gave way to spectacular display of pure real road racing.

Wednesday 9th July 2025 :

With the sun finally gracing the Billown Circuit, Wednesday 9th July became a packed schedule, compensating for lost track time. 

The day kicked off with the Ellan Vannin Fuels Senior Race. Right from the start, it was clear that Davey Todd was on a mission. Riding his 8TEN Racing BMW, Todd made a statement, pulling a modest but decisive gap by Iron Gate on the opening lap. 

While Dean Harrison, on his Honda Racing UK machine, briefly set the fastest lap on the second lap, Todd was in absolute command. He extended his lead lap by lap, culminating in a new race lap record of 2 minutes 11.433 seconds on lap four. 

This blistering pace propelled him to an eventual winning margin of 4.564 seconds over Harrison. 

A highly commendable performance also came from Nathan Harrison, who secured the final podium spot with a composed ride aboard his H&H Motorcycles Honda.

Next up was the JCK Limited 600cc B Race, which saw a fantastic battle unfold. Newcomer John Marsh (No. 54) impressed everyone by taking a third place on the podium. Paul Cranston (No. 93), who secured the win, building on his strong showing in qualifying. Dennis Booth (No. 26) completed the top three, in second position, adding to his consistent week.

The premier middleweight class, the H&H Motorcycles 600cc Race, proved to be a nail-biter. This race delivered multiple lead changes and some incredibly close-quarters racing. While results from this particular race were hard-fought and tight at the time of going to press, the sheer intensity was a highlight, showcasing the competitive depth in the Supersport category.

The day’s action concluded with the highly anticipated Ace Hire Sidecar Race. The dynamic duo of Ryan and Callum Crowe (No. 7 outfit) continued their impressive 2025 form, clinching a thrilling victory. They faced stiff competition from Pete Founds and Jevan Walmsley (No. 72 outfit), who, despite a major incident at the recent TT, showed incredible resilience on a borrowed machine to finish a strong second, just over six seconds adrift. Lee Crawford and Scott Hardie (No. 4 outfit) completed the podium, demonstrating their consistent pace.

Thursday 10th July 2025 :Championship Day

Thursday 10th July, the final day of racing, brought a full day’s racing to the Billown Course, including some historic lap speeds.

The morning opened with the second 600cc races, split into the JCK Limited 600cc B Race and the S&S Motors 600cc Race. In the B race, the top three once again demonstrated strong performances with John Marsh this time keeping Paul Cranston at bay and collecting his first Isle of Man S100 win.

The main S&S Motors 600cc Race was another epic encounter. While Davey Todd and Michael Dunlop battled intensely, it was Mike Browne (Russell Yamaha) who ultimately took the spoils. Dunlop, on his Ducati, recovered well after dropping to sixth on lap one, fighting back to join the lead battle and ultimately setting the fastest lap of the race at 2:17.548, but couldn’t quite overhaul Browne and Todd.  Less than half a secondd separated the top three!

The GH Corlett Solo Founders Race provided another opportunity for riders to shine, with competitive fields ensuring exciting racing throughout.  Craig Szczypek taking the spoils from Adam Williams and Craig Kennedy who took the final spot on the podium.

The Steam Packet Senior Race was a fierce repeat of Wednesday’s Senior contest. Davey Todd, aboard his 8TEN Racing BMW, once again squared off against Dean Harrison. In a truly breathtaking display of skill and nerve, Todd narrowly edged out Harrison by a mere 0.212 seconds, securing his third win of the meeting. Michael Dunlop secured another podium finish in third, with Nathan Harrison in fourth.

The Station Garage Lightweight Consolation Race provided a platform for riders to gain valuable track time and secure strong finishes, with spirited battles seen throughout the field.  Andy Smart, David Glossop and Russell Brook filling the steps for this race in which a mere three seconds separated the top three.

The afternoon session commenced with the Bettridge’s 600cc Challenge Race. This was a hotly contested affair, as riders pushed their machines to the limit. Michael Dunlop beat off Davey Todd with less less that 0.2s between the pair.  Mike Browne completed the podium about 7 seconds behind which highlights the blistering pace of Dunlop and Todd.

Then came the Bushy’s Lightweight Race, which also showcased tight competition and some excellent riding.  Rob Hodson and Davey Todd on Paton machinery took first and second, Michael Sweeney was nipping at Todd’s heels and took third, 0.225 seconds off the pace of Todd.

However, the undeniable highlight of Thursday, and indeed the entire event, were the two championship races. The Ellan Vannin Fuels Solo Championship Race, run over nine laps, was a true masterclass. Davey Todd and Dean Harrison engaged in a breathtaking duel, pushing each other to new limits. In a historical moment for the Southern 100, both riders recorded the first-ever 117mph laps around the Billown circuit! Harrison edged out Todd on pure speed with a 117.541mph lap, but it was Davey Todd who ultimately clinched the Solo Championship title, showcasing incredible consistency and race craft to secure his fourth victory of the meeting. Michael Dunlop completed the podium, a testament to his enduring talent.

Finally, the Daryl Blake Construction Sidecar Championship Race, contested over eight laps, once again saw the Crowe brothers dominate. Ryan and Callum Crowe secured their maiden Sidecar Championship title, capping off a stellar week of racing and firmly establishing themselves as the team to beat.

The 2025 Southern 100, in its 70th anniversary year, its Platinum Jubilee, may have had a challenging start with the weather, but the racing delivered was nothing short of spectacular. The sheer grit of the riders, the dedication of the marshals and organisers, and the unwavering support of the fans created an atmosphere unique to the Billown Course.
