The Future of Irish Road Racing is in the Balance

This post is now even more poignant given the postponements and cancellation of many 2020 events due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Please take the time to read and digest…

I am going to ‘Stickie’ this post until around the start of the Season because I think all road racing fans need to read and share it. The future of Irish Road Racing is in the balance and that balance is slowing tipping the wrong way!

It is relatively bleak reading, but it raises some very valid points. In 2020 we have definitely lost the Enniskillen Road Races with that event opting to relocate to a circuit. Also the Ulster Grand Prix looks very like it will not have a 2020 event – its future beyond that looks grim if the rumoured figures of debt are even remotely true and Cookstown have went on record saying that another bad year or two will put their event in real jeopardy.

Does motorcycle road racing on public roads in Ireland have a future?

2019 Cookstown 100 Results

The 2019 Irish Road Racing Season got off to a flying start at Cookstown over 26th and 27 April 2019.

With Storm Hannah still showing her venom bringing heavy rain and strong winds right up to the latter part of the morning, the fact that the Cookstown club managed to run a full program is even more impressive.  A great days racing that was unfortunately finished just a little bit to early as the feature race, the eight lap Cookstown 100, was red flagged on its first attempt due to weather – resulting in a five lap restarted race – which was red flagged due to a race incident.

More importantly though no one was seriously hurt over the event and even though the final race was red flagged there was a full schedule and pretty constant day of all day racing.

Guess who decided to match that flying start?  Yep, Derek McGee, Derek Shiels, Adam McLean and Michael Sweeney! All were lapping in the Superbike race within 0.3s of each other and less than a single second separated the four at the end of an unfortunately red flagged race (twice).

There was a little bit of chopping and changing off the schedule over the day due to the ever changing weather conditions.  Something which the organisations managed really well and a lesson others could learn well:

Get the right bikes out at the right time as the conditions allow.

Remember the only red flag due to weather that we had was in the final race.  This was in a  day that the only precipitation we didn’t have was probably snow!

Thos previous 2 days of qualifying have brought us to the 2017 Ulster Grand Prix Saturday Race Day and here’s how that panned out.

The schedule was as follows :

Ulster Grand Prix Race Schedule 2017
Ulster Grand Prix Race Schedule 2017

It really was an epic day’s racing the highlights for me were two fold.  Firstly – Bruce Anstey taking a Superbike win and secondly – Davy Morgan taking the lightweight win on his 250 Honda!  Epic.   Make sure to check out my galleries from every qualifying session and each race!  Lat year I was disappointed in the Ulster Grand Prix for many reasons, however that is all in the past, the 2017 UGP Saturday Race Day was – simply – outstanding.

Bruce Anstey wanted his overlap record back and he got it with a 3.18:249 lap – that’s an average speed of 134.396 mph.  However that record only sttod for a lap then Dean Harrison came in with a blingingly quick 134.614 mph lap that took 3.17:928 minutes complete and also took the overall lap record.

Another absolutely noteworthy rider is Peter Hickman – his first outing on the roads and already a Superbike win (and a couple of others) already under his belt

Dan Kneen to join Tyco BMW for the 2017 Ulster Grand Prix

Read the Tyco BMW Press Release here :

http://tycobmw.com/manxman-kneen-to-join-tyco-bmw-for-the-ulster-grand-prix/

Tyco BMW have announced that Manx rider Dan Kneen will ride for them at the 2017 MCE Ulster Grand Prix.

With Ian Hutchinson out of contention for the Dundrod meeting due to the injuries he sustained at the Isle of Man TT, former MCE Ulster GP winner Kneen is set to be the team’s only rider at the final international road race of the year.

30-year-old Manxman Dan had his most successful TT campaign to date this year, securing both his fastest lap and a debut podium in the Superstock race behind Ian Hutchinson and Peter Hickman.

He comes to Dundrod with an impressive Southern 100 performance under his belt too, narrowly missing out on glory in the senior race to Michael Dunlop, who crossed the finish line just 0.12 seconds in front of Kneen.

Dan Kneen said: “First of all, it’s nice to be asked to ride for Tyco BMW. Obviously, the opportunity has come up, due to Hutchy’s injury, so I’d like to take this opportunity to wish him all the best with his recovery.

2017 Skerries 100 Results – 01/07/2017

Unfortunately I never made it to the 2017 Skerries 100, however that shouldnt stop you getting all the results… and it wont!

The event was dominated by Derek Shiels’ Cookstown Burrows Engineering Suzuki with a hat trick of big bike wins.  Derek McGee’s performance can’t be over looked either with a further three wins added to his tally and the seven laps of 2.9 miles Grand Final (on it’s second attempt, the first being halted by a red flag due to rain) went something like this :

Shiels started in pole and surged off to an impressive lead winning overall by 10 seconds, second place went to Derek McGee, followed by Michael Sweeney.  Newcomer Davey Todd was fourth, Davy Morgan fifth and Graham Kennedy in sixth.
