2023 NI Sidecar Racing Back on Schedule :
In breaking news just over a week ago all Northern Irish Sidecar Racing was confirmed as cancelled. The details of that cancellation can be found in this detailed TBNI.Blog Post.
In a Press Release from the MCUI(UC) earlier today the good news has come that a solution has been found in relation to obtaining insurance for the NI Sidecar events, which can, thankfully, now go ahead.

2023 NI Sidecar Racing Cancelled :
With the news that motorcycle racing events in Northern Ireland were saved last week with a new insurance quote and a sizeable and generous donation from a local business it has now come to light that Northern Irish Sidecar Racing was not included in that package.
This was brought into the public domain through Social Media. A statement posted on Facebook just after 9pm on 16th March 2023 from the Irish Sidecar Club cited their side of the story.

2023 Tandragee 100 Cancelled :
With the news that insurance has been secured for Northern Irish motorcycle sporting events information is coming thick and fast from all the clubs with the plans for their events , the necessity to support the sport, and the lack of time there is to get things in place to meet the events planned dates.
Unfortunately the Tandragee Club have confirmed via a Facebook post and referencing their previous Press Release that the 2023 event will not go ahead. There is still positive news, in that the Club are committed to running the event in 2024.
2023 Cookstown 100 Tickets Back on Sale :
With the news that insurance has been secured for Northern Irish motorcycle sporting events information is coming thick and fast from all the clubs with the plans for their events , the necessity to support the sport, and the lack of time there is to get things in place to meet the events planned dates.
The Cookstown Club have announced via a Facebook post that tickets are again available to purchase and will be until 25/03/2023.
Tickets are available for £25 with covers spectating and a programme, as well as a £60 VIP ticket which comes with a private Grandstand, private toilets and food and drink options from a marquee.
With today’s great news that racing is going ahead, race packages are still available for the next couple of weeks, so if you want to see this great sport and sample the atmosphere, you know what to do

2023 Northern Irish Road Racing to Go Ahead :
The Motorcycle Union of Ireland (Ulster Centre) have just announced via release on their Facebook Page that motorcycle road racing in Northern Ireland is now set to go ahead in 2023.
A new quote has been obtained re the otherwise unaffordable insurance that had cancelled all motorcycling events in Northern Ireland. This quote, along with the funds raised by the generous donations of motorcycle fans, now means that Northern Irish Road Racing events can now go ahead.

IMPORTANT : The are some major changes since 2022, for example the Senior TT now awards the race winner – at the end – as opposed to at the end and throughout each lap as per 2022 and previously. The prize for winning the Senior TT has also increased this year from £18,000 to £25,000. The other races have also seen increases in their placed prizes and overall prize pots.

2023 Isle of Man Road Racing Insurance Rises 18% :
Following the news of that all Northern Irish Road Racing events have been cancelled due to unsustainable insurance costs the Isle of Man has now also revealed that it too has been affected by an insurance cost rise.
Although not the circa 300% rise that Northern Ireland has faced this year the Insurance to cover this year’s Manx road racing events has risen by 18%.
Enterprise Minister Tim Johnston revealed the figure in Tynwald this week – confirming the 2023 policy will cost £930,000 – up from £790,000 last year.
He described rising costs as a ‘challenge’ for motorsport events but adds his department has a ‘clear strategy in place’ to grow and diversify the TT.
The cost covers the likes of the TT, pre-TT, MGP and Southern 100.
Irish events are also still in doubt as no cover has yet been obtained for any 2023 events.

**(Other than the addition of ‘NOT’ to the title of this post, everything else will remain unedited as an accurate account of the events leading up to the cancellation of all 2023 Motorcycling events as well as what has happened since that initial cancellation).
Yes, unfortunately that title is correct! As of the 10th February all Northern Irish Motorcycling events have been cancelled (except Motocross). That’s all road, track and trials racing!
And in one simple statement that is ‘devastating news.’
It has been a crazy 24 hours for Northern Irish road racing, and furthermore a crazy 3 or 4 days for Irish Motorcycle events. As as the time went by over the course of today it simply got worse. But where did it all start and what happened when?
By now you will have seen Social Media flooded with the news that all motorcycle events in Northern Ireland, scheduled for 2023, have been cancelled. All the press have picked up on it, the internet has been on fire with rumour and the outcry from both the motorcycling fraternity and the public has been very noticeable and vocal, but how did we get here?
Since early this year there have been whispers that insurance was proving difficult to obtain for the year ahead. As the early part of this year progressed and the countdown to the year’s opening events got closer, those whispers had become very poorly kept secrets. It was pretty much common knowledge that the price of insurance was being quoted at a level that was simply prohibitively expensive.
To put it in context the figures being spoken about are – insurance for the 2022 Season was about £170,000. The quotes for 2023 were around the £400,000 mark.
Hope however remained that this would be sorted out and another nail in the coffin of road racing could be avoided. As we got into the final weeks of January and into the first week of February this hope had started to turn into worry.
On the 8th February 2023 one of the first official statement from Motorcycling Ireland was issued and it made for very grim reading indeed.
2023 Road Racing Insurance Crisis
No official comment has been made by the MCI or MCI(UC) however the skuttlebutt is that the latest quote for insurance has seen an increase in 300% from last year’s premium.
The Cookstown Club have made a comment, and at the time of writing are the only Club to have done so.
The remain positive for a 2023 event however do recognise the current situation and the risks that are currently hanging over motorcycling as a sport.

2023 Tandragee 100 Road Races Dates Announced :
The 2023 Tandragee 100 will run over the 28th April 2023 – 29th April 2023.
Further details will be posted when the become available, however it is usual for the Friday (28/04) to be the main Practice Day with the Saturday (29/04) being the main race day.
