macOS 10.12.4 brings Night Shift to the Mac

Apple releases macOS Sierra 10.12.4

The new revision of macOS Sierra has just been released by Apple. macOS Sierra 10.12.4 is now available for Mac users, but before you install it, here’s the lowdown on the new features.

Please remember that when you decide to install the update make sure you have backed up your Mac’s data. Losing everything on a hard drive is something no one wants to consider so make sure to protect yourself, just in case!

Night Shift

The major new feature in macOS Sierra 10.12.4 is Night Shift, which made its debut in iOS9.3. Night Shift is available on the following Macs:

MacBook Air (Mid 2012 or later)
MacBook (Early 2015 or later)
MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 or later)
Mac mini (Late 2012 or later)
iMac (Late 2012 or later)
Mac Pro (Late 2013)

Apple have rather subtly released a new iPad this week, which replaces the iPad Air 2 and is simply called the ‘iPad.’

The good news is that it starts at a lower price point – £339 for a 32GB model, reduced from £379 for the same capacity iPad Air 2.

The iPad range now consists of the iPad Mini 4, the iPad, and the iPad Pro (9.7 inch and 12.9 inch)

So what are the differences : (Between iPad Air 2 and the iPad)

The new iPad is slightly thicker (1.4mm)
The new iPad is slightly heavier (32g)
The new iPad has an Apple A9 processor – the iPad Air 2 has an A8X
The new iPad does not have a laminated screen.

Fixing Wifi Problems on MacOS (Yosemite / Sierra) – Connected to Wifi But No Internet…

MacOS users : Bookmark this page on your phone – someday it will save you a bucket load of hassle!

Recently I have experienced a few problems with the Sleep / Wake function of one of my drives that then causes MacOS to restart.

Unfortunately sometimes that still does not wake up the drive and it needs powered down and restarted, then MacOS needs Shut down, left for a moment and restarted. Thankfully that process seems to be sorting out the hard drive issue, however it also seemed to bring another problem with it.

Following the shut down and restarting of the computer it appears that the wifi has connected without issue, but I have no internet connection. Nothing. No Internet, no email, no connections of any kind. No amount of restarting, rebooting or waiting would solve it. No amount of disconnecting the wifi rescanning, trying to connect to the iPhone as a hotspot would bring my internet activiites back to life. So how do you fix it?

The iPod Classic is Dead

It is a sad day indeed,

It finally happened. After years of hanging around amidst flashier, smaller, and cheaper options, Apple has given the iPod Classic the axe, thus killing the last remnant of the original iPod design.

Once the Apple website was updated following today’s event for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and Apple Watch, the iPod Classic was missing from the iPod section of the site. That started the speculation.

Since then, the iPod Classic is also now missing from the updated online store, and the previous website URL for that specific model now just points to the general iPod page now. Sadly, the old standby appears to be gone for good – without an announcement, memorial page, or candlelight vigil even.

It’s easy to forget that the last design revision of the original iPod launched in 2007. A final capacity bump (up to 160GB) came in 2009, but that represented the last change to the iPod Classic as Apple turned its attention to the iPod Touch, Nano, and Shuffle models – not to mention the iPhone.

The iPod Classic remained the last high-capacity option for music lovers who wanted a large local collection on the go; as of now, the largest iPod Touch weighs in at 64GB, while the other iPods are much smaller on the top end. With the iPhone 6 models offering a 128GB option, hopefully a new iPod Touch will emerge to take over the capacity mantle.

iPhone 5 Lunatik Taktik Case : UnBoxing

I firmly believe a picture speaks a thousand words, so as with many of my unboxings, this unboxing is based around a photo gallery.

The Lunatik Taktik Case is a hardcore monster of a case. It started its life on KickStarter (a crowd funded startup site, that helps fledgling companies get the money they need from the public often by offering great incentives to ‘backers.’

As you can see from the photos this is a big case, nothing about it says subtle, it needs its own tool just to get it on your phone! The gorilla glass adding further protection to your phones screen and the overall styling shouting ‘go ahead, break me, I dare ya!’

Although obviously nothing is unbreakable, just ask the Titanic! However if this thing breaks in your pocket, there is a good chance your leg is broken too, so you’ll be more worried about that!

Otterbox Armor Unboxing / Water Test and Initial Thoughts…

With my upcoming trip to Florida now only mere hours away the Postman arrived at about 9.00am with the package I was waiting on…An Otterbox Armor.

Now these cases are not cheap coming in at around £70 – £75 (or $100) however the claims they boast are definitely worth looking into!

MacBook Pro SSD (Solid State Drive) Install Guide

If you ask anyone in relation to current recommended upgrades for their machines the most highly recommended and common answer will be, ‘install an SSD.’

An SSD is a Solid State Drive, and it replaces your HDD (Hard Disk Drive). It is basically a giant flash drive, with no moving parts or spinning disks and and pull information from itself almost instantly.

It is hard to beat Wikipedia for definitions so here you go :

The main benefits from such an upgrade are :

1. Massive improvement is booting times.

2. Massive improvement in program launch times.

3. Massive improvement in data access times.

4. So basically everything runs quickly.

I decided to take this upgrade on, and it is one that you can easily do yourself in about twenty minutes!

Here is a quick guide to get you on your way to a massive speed improvement of your machine. At the end I have added a video that shows my machine booting prior to the upgrade with the standard 750GB HDD installed, then booting up with the new 256Gb SSD installed.

Good luck and take your time, there’s no rush, and no reason to be troubled by this upgrade.

1. Make sure you have everything : You will need your new SSD, an external case for your old HDD (as well as aiding in data transfer if you decide to go down that route), a set of precision screw drivers.

iPhone Mail Message Stuck in Outbox – An Easy Solution…

This happened to me today, so I thought I would share the easiest solution ever to sorting this problem out. Basically an email message was stuck for whatever reason in my Out Box on my iPhone(5) (running iOS6). It was stuck all day and as the battery has enough issues in lasting the day this really didn’t help. So if like me you were puzzled as to how to resolve this, (because as it is trying to send you can’t click on ‘Edit’ and subsequently delete the email) here is the solution.

1. Go to ‘Settings’
2. Put the phone into ‘Airplane Mode’
3. Go to ‘Mail’
4. Go to your ‘Out Box’
5. Click ‘Edit’
6. Delete the problem message.
7. Go to ‘Settings’
8. Turn off ‘Airplane Mode’
9. Continue with an enjoyable stress free day!

iPhone 5 Cygnett Bulldozer Case Unboxing

I picked this case up a while ago, actually I attempted to pick it up in time for the iPhone 5 release, however due to some absolutely shocking customer services from the company I ordered it from it arrived almost 2 months after release. It was obviously sent straight back, not before I took the opportunity to take a look at the case and make some initial first impressions.

I have to stress straight away though that the case was returned not because of the quality of the case, but purely due to the atrocious Customer Services, and lies that I received. (Item marked as dispatched – item never arrived, assured item posted, item never arrived, item marked as out of stock, no replacement available, item comes into stock, item marked again as dispatched, repeat contact through to no stock available through to available again, so third item arrives, and from follow up there was never an item 1 or 2, as the company had never actually had stock until the arrival of the third!) – Anyway rant over!
